Project Information

In 2010 the Hobart Sanitary District was served with an Agreed Order by IDEM to eliminate Sanitary Sewer Overflow’s (SSO’s) within the HSD system. A compliance plan and sanitary master plans were developed to chart the path of eliminating SSO’s.

HSD embarked on providing a redundant Force Main and modernizing the Main Lift Station (Project) because of the Northside Master Plan Project Determination Matrix completed in 2020-2021. The typical service life of a lift station is approximately 20 to 25 years. The Main Lift Station and 24-inch Force Main have been in service for approximately 34 years (commissioned in 1988). With the understanding of typical life expectancy and safety concerns, the general improvements for the Main Lift Station and Force Main include the following:

  • Pump & Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Upgrades
  •  Electrical System Upgrades including Master Control Center (MCC)
  • New Transformers
  • General Site Improvements
  • Redundant 30-inch Force Main (4.5 miles) to Gary’s Treatment Plant
  • Appurtenances

The redundant Force Main will minimize risk to the residents and HSD as it will allow flows to be placed in either the 30-inch or 24-inch force main upon completion of the improvements. The modernization of the Main Lift Station will gain efficiencies and provide additional wet weather capacity that will reduce the amount of SSO’s currently being observed by HSD. Due to project scope and past success, HSD decided to utilize a Guaranteed Savings Contract (GSC) which allows for the addition of a contractor input early in the design process to value engineer the improvements as they are being designed. Kokosing Industrial Inc was selected as the contractor and Butler, Fairman and Seufert was selected as the Engineer.
